BOONSBORO - Miss Frances Virginia Ahalt, 98, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village, Boonsboro, Md., where she resided for 11 years.

Born April 18, 1911, in Middletown, Md., she was the daughter of the late M. Foster and Sarah Virginia Shank Ahalt.

Prior to her residence at Fahrney-Keedy, she lived her entire life on the home farm where she was born and raised. For the majority of those years, she lived with the family of her brother, Richard Ahalt, his wife, Frances, and their children, Mark Ahalt, Marsha Bowers, Mike Ahalt, Melinda Davis and Mac Ahalt, who preceded her in death.


Frances received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland and her master of science degree in education from Syracuse University. She was a teacher in the Frederick County (Md.) Public Schools for 46 years and was the county's first reading specialist.

As a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, she enjoyed serving in many capacities throughout her life.

Surviving are a brother, Maurice Ahalt and wife, Regina; and sisters-in-law, Catharine Ahalt and Marguerite Ahalt.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Coblentz and Mary Ahalt; and six brothers, Leroy Ahalt, Bruce Ahalt, Edwin Ahalt, Louis Ahalt, George Ahalt and Richard Ahalt.

Frances was very fond of her nieces and nephews: Paul Coblentz, Sara Lynn Ahalt, Susan Ahalt, Nancy Brooks, Sarah Hinds, Christopher Ahalt, Ginny Wolf, Ann Pond, Ike Ahalt, Bim Ahalt, Debbie Currier, Gay Iris Ahalt and Jay Ahalt, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her niece, Janice Coblentz; and nephew, Fred Ahalt.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Fahrney-Keedy Home for their friendship, love and care shown to Frances.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St. Middletown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, with the Rev. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in the Lutheran Church Cemetery.
