Spelling bee



Saint Mary Catholic School student Jessica Swarner will attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week in Washington, D.C.

Jessica was the highest scorer in Saint Mary's eighth-grade class and advanced to the county spelling bee.

She took first place and earned a spot in the national competition. Her father will be accompanying her.

TOPS 77



On May 18, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 77 heard Cleo Burger lead the program on obesity.

Mary Lou Edmands won the "Get-R-Done" contest with a 3 1/2-pound loss.

The chapter will be taking part in the Living Well Expo at Valley Mall June 6.

The St. Maria Goretti Alumni Association will host the soon-to-be graduates and alumni at a luncheon at the American Legion Thursday.

Senior Recognition Night will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Otterbein Ministry Centre in Waynesboro, Pa.

Graduation will be Saturday at St. Ann Church at 1 p.m.

TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 held its awards day recently.

Church services



Beginning Saturday, June 6, Haven Lutheran Church, at 1035 Haven Road, will begin its spoken service and communion on Saturdays at 5 p.m. Then, starting Sunday, June 7, its traditional service in the sanctuary will begin at 8:15 a.m.

There will be another service titled Worship on the Lawn, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Bring a lawn chair and dress casually.
