Williamsport Rotary to mark 25 years

May 24, 2009

The Williamsport Rotary will be celebrating its 25th charter anniversary June 17.

To honor the occasion, a dinner and a special awards presentation will be held at the Academy Theater and catered by Applause Catering.

Doctor Richard Young, the club's first president and still active member, will be the master of ceremonies.

Founded June 18, 1984, the Williamsport Rotary first met at a Hagerstown restaurant then moved to the Williamsport American Legion and then to Homewood Retirement Center.

The Williamsport Rotary has continued the tradition of helping with the funding of international projects over the years, including the fight to end polio.

One of the first service projects included purchasing 100 infant car seats for new parents in response to a new law that required parents to secure their newborn in a car seat upon hospital discharge.

Recent local projects include the new Williamsport playground equipment, Williamsport Food Bank, Rotary Youth Leadership Scholarships and the founding of a Rotary Inneract Club at Williamsport High School.

The Williamsport Rotary meets Wednesdays for breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Red Men Lodge on Lappans Road.

Former members, past presidents and other interested parties wishing to attend can contact Jeff Cline, charter dinner committee chairman, at 301-331-0383 or via e-mail at for details.
