Fleet Reserve announces essay winners

The Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 142, presented awards for its Americanism/Patriotism essay contest on the topic "What the United States Flag Stands For."

The ceremony was April 22 at AMVETS Post 9 in Middletown, Md.

First-place awards went to Kathryn Tighe from Middletown, a seventh-grade student at St. John Regional Catholic School and Heather Long from Martinsburg, W.Va., an junior at Faith Christian Academy.

Each received a $200 U.S. savings bond, first- place certificates and a U.S. flag.

The flags were obtained from the office of U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md. A certificate that stated that they were flown over the U.S. Capitol accompanied them.

A total of 17 entries were received and all received a certificate of participation. The winning essays were also judged by the association's East Coast Regional Essay Committee with Kathryn Tighe receiving a $200 U.S. Savings Bond as a first-place prize.
