Jefferson Market destroyed in $1 million blaze

May 21, 2009

JEFFERSON, Md. -- Damage was estimated at $1 million after a fire destroyed the Jefferson Market early Thursday, the Frederick County Division of Fire/Rescue Services said in a news release.

A neighbor reported a fire in the building on the 3700 block of Jefferson Pike shortly after midnight, the release said.

Fire and rescue units arrived within minutes of the 911 call and reported a large amount of smoke coming from the building.  Shortly after crews made entry to extinguish the fire, fire shot through the roof, causing crews to evacuate the building due to the instability of the roof structure, the release said.

Investigators from the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office were called to the scene to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the release said.
