Preps Roundup -- Mentzer's 2-hit shutout lifts Trojans to playoff win

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Calvin Mentzer pitched a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and two walks and retired 16 straight Hempfield batters at one point to pace Chambersburg to a 4-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the PIAA District 3-AAAA playoffs Thursday.

The Trojans (14-5) capitalized on several Hempfield miscues, scoring a run on a wild pitch and two more on a throwing error.

Tyler McDonald had the only RBI for Chambersburg, while Zane Bard added three hits.

Meyersdale 8, Southern Fulton 7

MEYERSDALE, Pa. -- Southern Fulton couldn't hold on to a 6-2 third-inning lead as the Indians fell to Meyersdale in eight innings in the PIAA District 5-A playoffs.

Seth Hall went 2-for-4 and drove in two of Southern Fulton's six third-inning runs, while Justin Berkstresser scored twice.

Derek Younker pitched all eight innings, gave up seven hits and struck out 11, but the Indians (9-10) committed seven errors behind him.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Brett Moreland had two hits, including a triple, and scored three runs as Jefferson shut out Moorefield.

Holden Carroll had two hits, Bryan Milburn had two RBIs and Marquis Jones scored three runs for the Cougars (28-3).

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Chris Testo had three hits and three RBIs to lead Avalon past St. Maria Goretti in the championship round of the Maryland Private Schools 'B' Tournament on Wednesday.

J.J. O'Neill struck out 12 in a losing effort for the Gaels (10-13). Will Murray and Aaron Wilkinson each had an RBI.

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Rochelle Christman hit a pair of two-run homers to lead Greencastle-Antrim past Donegal in the PIAA District 3-AAA quarterfinals.

Katy Bobbitt scored two runs for the Blue Devils (19-3, 12-0). Greencastle will play Kennard Dale in the district semifinals Tuesday.
