CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Everett Ezra Norton, 87, of Charles Town, W.Va., formerly of Lewisburg, W.Va., passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

Born Jan. 9, 1922, in Centerville, Ga., he was the son of the late Everett Ezra Norton Sr. and the late Paulina Magdalene Davis Norton.

He was of the Southern Baptist faith, and a founding pastor and charter member of the First Baptist Church of Fairlea, W.Va.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, European Theater.

Mr. Norton was a geometry teacher and dean of the middle school at the former Greenbrier Military School, where he held the rank of captain. After the school closed, he was a business manager for the West Virginia Department of Corrections. He later continued to teach math for Greenbrier County Public Schools and Greenbrier Community College Center, from which he retired at age 75.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kay Songer Norton, at home; daughter, Dr. Annyce Stone, and husband, Thomas, of Smithsburg, Md.; son, Alan Norton, and wife, Evelyn, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Megan, Lauren and Virginia Norton, and Levi and Simon Ezra Stone; one sister-in-law, Dot Norton of Tucker, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Mason and Geraldine Crane; and two brothers, Hulan and William Norton.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 21, 2009, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, U.S. 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at the First Baptist Church of Fairlea, 290 Seneca Trail (U.S. 219), Ronceverte, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Everett E. Norton Math Scholarship Fund, c/o the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, 1000 Technology Drive, Suite 2000, Fairmont, WV 26554.
