Memorial Day observances

o Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, 9:30 a.m.

Memorial Day observance includes a color guard from AMVETS Post 10, bagpiper Rick Conrad and a Civil War re-enactor campout in the cemetery through Sunday afternoon. Featured speaker is Fred Shinbur, chairman of the Maryland Veterans Commission and the Joint Veterans Committee of Maryland.

o A wreath-laying ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Sharpsburg's Town Hall, and the Rohrersville Band will perform from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Parade starts at 1:30 p.m. at Sharpsburg Elementary School and follows Main Street to Antietam National Cemetery. A 3 p.m. commemoration ceremony at Antietam National Cemetery will feature music by the Boonsboro High School band. Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. J. Michael Johnson will be guest speaker at the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. ceremonies.


o Monocacy National Battlefield Park rangers will present a program focusing on the history of Memorial Day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday in Frederick, Md.

On Monday, visitors will be encouraged to participate in a national moment of remembrance. At 3 p.m., staff and visitors will pause for a moment of silence. There will also be a memorial flag display in the park to honor those soldiers who fell during the Battle of Monocacy. The Monocacy National Battlefield Visitor Center is on Md. 355, 2 miles south of Frederick.


o Memorial Day services at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., 11 a.m. Featured speaker will be state Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington. American Legion Post 42 Honor Guard will present a memorial wreath service. Music and refreshments.

o A Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony will be at the World War I monument in front of 19 N. Main St. in Boonsboro beginning at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., the traditional Memorial Day parade marches from Boonsboro High School through town to Reeder's Alley.

o A Memorial Day program will be in front of the Washington County Courthouse, 95 W. Washington St., at 2 p.m. Hosted by Morris Frock Post 42 of the American Legion, the event will feature patriotic music and a wreath-laying ceremony for veterans groups and any organizations wishing to remember deceased members. Organizations who want to place wreaths Sunday must notify Post Adjutant Ruth Ungvarsky at 301-733-7676. Speakers will include state Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and the Rev. Clark Carr, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church and a chaplain with the Maryland National Guard who recently returned from Iraq.

Saturday, May 30

o The Joint Veterans Council will hold its traditional Memorial Day observance at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Park in Halfway at 9 a.m. Speaker will be Ronald Bowers, a former Washington County Commissioner and a retired U.S. Army Reserve officer.

o Smithsburg's Memorial Day ceremony will be in Veterans Park on West Water Street at 6 p.m. Guest speaker will be retired Marine Lt. Col. Charles F. Eaton, chairman of the all-services retiree council at Fort Detrick, Md. A canopy and chairs will be provided.
