Man charged in assault on state trooper

HAGERSTOWN -- A Martinsburg, W.Va., man was charged with a a drug violation and assault on a state trooper following an incident on Interstate 81 north of Hagerstown on Tuesday, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

William Curtis Hicks Jr., 32, of 234 Flagstaff Circle, was charged with assault and controlled dangerous substance violations, police said.

At 10:24 a.m., police responded to a call to assist a motorist on I-81 northbound I-81 at Showalter Road, the release said.

When police encountered the man standing outside his vehicle, he was very agitated and uncooperative, refused to obey verbal commands and assumed a combat fighting stance, the release said.

The then assaulted a state trooper and fled across the median strip before he was pepper-sprayed and taken into custody, police said.

A bottle of liquid PCP was recovered from the man's car and it was determined that the suspect was under the influence of PCP, police said.

Hicks was taken to Washington County Hospital for observation. No troopers were injured, the release said.
