MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Mrs. Mary Jane Buchanan McDonald, age 81, of Middletown, passed away May 17, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after being in failing health for the past seven years.

She was the wife of Marshall David McDonald, whom she married Jan. 2, 1970, in Hagerstown, Md. They lived at their current address for the past 17 years.

Born Aug. 26, 1927, in Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Alice Burkett Buchanan.

Mary Jane attended the Greencastle School District, and moved to the Frederick area as a young adult.

She was employed by Victor Cleaners of Frederick, Md., Union Bridge Clothing and Sagner's Clothing in Frederick, where she served as a union steward and president. She was past president of the Baltimore Joint Board of Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union of America, and a personal friend of Sen. Barbara Mikulski. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1067 of Frederick for more than 25 years, and a member of REAC 1067 of Frederick.


She joined the Pythian Sisters of Maryland in 1981, and served as district deputy from 1988 to 1989. She was past grand chief of Mount City Temple 14. She was also a member of the Past Deputy Grand Chief Association and the Past Grand Chief Association of the State of Maryland.

She was an active member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and a member of the Women's Society. She enjoyed working with and doing craft shows, her flower gardens, playing bingo, and spending time at their Eastern Shore vacation home.

Mary Jane loved and lived life to the fullest.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lavonne Darlene Buchanan Ehrhart, and husband, Cris, of Greencastle, Pa.; two sisters, Geraldine Buchanan Irving and husband, Robert, of Hagerstown and Nellie Buchanan Witmer McIntosh of Greencastle; a brother, John Buchanan, and wife, Gay, of Greencastle; three granddaughters, Brenda Ehrhart Schmidt of Greencastle, Stacie Ehrhart Keller and husband, Andy, of Waterfall, Pa., and Michel "Shelly" Ehrhart Zimmerman and husband, Sean, of Mercersburg, Pa.; a great-granddaughter, Katherine "Katie" Ehrhart of Greencastle; three great-grandsons, Timothy A. Shatzer Jr. of Waynesboro, Pa., Andrew Keller and Nicholas Keller of Waterfall; a great-great-granddaughter, Mikalyn R. Shatzer of Waynesboro; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the chapel mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 north in Frederick. The Pythian Sisters will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, in the chapel mausoleum with the Rev. Richard Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens after a foot procession from the chapel mausoleum to the grave site.
