Katherine Hanna "Kate" Poffenberger, 94

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Katherine Hanna "Kate" Poffenberger, 94, a lifelong resident of Williamsport, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Kate was born in Williamsport Oct. 24, 1914, the daughter of the late Johnathan Peter and Susan Mahalia Wolfe Bowser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus Elwood "Boots" Poffenberger, in 1999.

She was a graduate of Williamsport High School, class of 1931.

Kate retired as a flight test inspector from Fairchild Aircraft Corp., Hagerstown, in 1977.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

Kate volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion Auxiliary in Williamsport.

Kate is survived by two sons, George F. Knode Jr. and Gerald L. Knode Sr. and his wife, Joan, all of Williamsport; two granddaughters, Susan Gross, Williamsport, and Melissa Davis, Marlowe, W.Va.; four grandsons, George F. Knode III and Jeremy Knode, both of Williamsport, and John Knode and J.L. Knode, both of Hagerstown; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, John F. Knode; a half sister; and three half brothers.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
