Heritage shows best at last to win MDCC title

May 16, 2009|By JACK HILL III

The Heritage Academy baseball team had it all to finish in style on Saturday.

"During the whole game, it seems like everything just came together," Heritage coach Mike Lowry said. "We were good with offense, pitching, fielding and base running. We had a lot of key two-out hits. We have had a great season. Today was a great way to end a terrific year."

And the Eagles did it with emphasis with a 10-0 victory over Broadfording Christian Academy in six innings to win the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament title at Grace Academy.

Heritage pitcher Andrew Hendershot fired a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in six innings for the complete-game victory.

"It feels great," said Hendershot, a senior. "We have been working hard all year. The coach did a good job teaching us the fundamentals. We definitely deserve this. I felt good throwing the ball. I lost my command for a little bit. But I was able to get it back and pitch out of some tough situations. Everyone did a good job of hitting today. The bottom of the batting order was putting the ball in play."

Hendershot added two hits and three RBIs, while Josh Long had two hits for the Eagles.

Heritage (11-1) scored in the bottom of the first as Chad Lowry and Cody Butts led off by drawing walks, leading to a successful double steal to advance. Hendershot hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Lowry.

The Eagles made it 4-0 in the second by scoring three runs. Mark Taggart reached on a two-base throwing error to lead off and stole third before scoring on Brian Hendershot's RBI grounder.

Aaron Clark recharged the rally with a two-out single to center, stole second and scored on Lowry's single to left. Lowry advanced on the throw to the plate and scored when Cody Butts singled to left.

A throwing error helped the Eagles to a run in the third and Hendershot's RBI single in the fourth built a 6-0 lead.

The Eagles closed out the game with four runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Hendershot, a sacrifice bunt by Taggart, a throwing error and a game-ending RBI single by Bubba Kriner.

"It's awesome," Mike Lowry said. "It is a lot of hard work. It has been a terrific group of boys to coach. They have grown so much together as a team. I am just very proud of all of them."
