WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mr. Donald A. Wishard, 81, of 125 Myrtle Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at his home. He had been in failing health since February 2009 and critically ill for the last two weeks.

He was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late John Albert "Jim" Wishard and Pearl E. (Hess) Wishard McKenzie. He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.

Mr. Wishard graduated from Waynesboro Senior High School with the class of 1945.

He and his wife of over 47 years, Mrs. Rosemary (Pine) Wishard, were married July 15, 1961, in Hagerstown, Md.

Mr. Wishard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving in Germany.

Following graduation from high school, he worked at Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing in Hagerstown. After his discharge from the military, he joined the family business, J.A. Wishard Trucking, Zullinger, Pa. After his father's death in 1955, he purchased the business and changed the name to D.A. Wishard Trucking Co. and Garage. He later added the International Dealership in 1960 until 1981. His son joined the business in 1984.


Mr. Wishard was a life member of Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grindstone Hill, where he served as financial secretary. He also was a member of William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Eagles Club, Inc., Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce, all of Waynesboro; B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown, Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association and national AARP.

He was an avid horse racing fan, having attended 16 Kentucky Derbies. He also was an avid Redskins and Minnesota Twins fan. He enjoyed traveling and hunting. Mr. Wishard, along with his wife, enjoyed spending time at their vacation home in Myrtle Beach.

Mr. Wishard played football for the former Waynesboro Tigers. He also was a member of the former Waynesboro Jaycees when they helped to build the Waynesboro Municipal Golf Course.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jill Wishard (Mrs. Thomas) McKenzie of Waynesboro; one son, James D. (husband of Jennifer) Wishard of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; one sister; one brother; one stepbrother; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Leslie K. McKenzie; one sister; and one stepbrother.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4856 Wayne Road, Chambersburg, Pa., with the Rev. Sandra R. Mackie officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
