Preps Area Roundup -- Trojans lead area teams at district meet

PREP TRACK & FIELD



SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Chambersburg placed third in the boys team standings and sixth in the girls out of roughly 50 schools at the PIAA District 3 Class AAA Championships on Saturday.

The top eight in each event were placewinners.

For the Chambersburg boys, ConRoy Smith was second in the 200 (22.58), Tyson Keith was third in the 200 (22.88), Kavon Bailey was third in the triple jump (45-2 1/4), David Eubanks was fifth in the 800 (1:57.43) and Caleb Hussack was fifth in the high jump (6-2). The Trojans also placed second in the 4x100 (42.66), fourth in the 4x400 (3:25.83) and fifth in the 4x800 (8:03.51)

For the Chambersburg girls, Anyssa Barbour was second in the 200 (26.05) and third in the 400 (58.14), Jessica Whitmore was fourth in the 100 (12.73), Lexi Arnold was fourth in the javelin (126-1) and Libby Cooper was seventh in the pole vault (10-0). The Trojans also placed fourth in the 4x100 (49.91).

For the Greencastle-Antrim boys, Seth Group was sixth in the javelin (175-5) and Andre McKenzie was eighth in the discus (140-9).

For the Greencastle-Antrim girls, Katrina Wright was fourth in the shot put (37-3) and fourth in the discus (121-3) and Rachelle Piper was eighth in the javelin (116-1).

For the Waynesboro girls, Paige Fleagle was seventh in the javelin (116-5) and Shaniqua Winfield was eighth in the shot put (35-5 1/2).

For the Waynesboro boys, Cory Young was third in the 110 hurdles (15.09) and Bryan Lowery was sixth in the pole vault (13-3).

For the James Buchanan boys, Brandon Smith was third in the 300 hurdles (39.13) and Nathaniel Witter was third in the pole vault (13-9).

PREP BASEBALL



Avalon 8, Goretti 5

WILLIAMSPORT -- Kyle Smith had two hits and two RBIs for St. Maria Goretti in the Gaels' loss to Avalon in the third round of the Maryland Class B Private School playoffs.

Jay Donoghue had two hits for the Gaels (9-12).

John Funk, Ivan Wood, Harry Klein had two hits each for Avalon.

Berkeley Springs 9, Keyser 8

KEYSER, W.Va. -- T.J. Lambert hit a three-run double as Berkeley Springs scored four runs in the top of the seventh to rally past Keyser and win the West Virginia Region II Section 2 tournament.

Michael Twigg had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs, while Matt Griffith and Erick Moss had three hits each for the Indians (11-8).

Berkeley Springs will host Grafton in the regional final.

Mercersburg 7, Western Reserve 3

SALTSBURG, Pa. -- Mercersburg Academy didn't need its seniors -- who left the Kiski Invitational early Saturday to attend their prom -- to beat Western Reserve.

Cesar Wong (1-0) pitched five strong innings for his first win of the season, and helped his cause with two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

The Blue Storm began the round-robin action Friday with an 11-1 win over host Kiski School.

Trevor Smith had three hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBIs for Mercersburg (15-3), while Tommy Timoney had two hits and Matt Timoney (4-0) pitched three innings of shutout relief for the win.

W.Va. state championships

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jacob Jones of Washington lost the boys No. 1 singles final, while David Leonard of Jefferson lost the boys No. 3 singles final at the West Virginia state championships.

Jones made the boys Class AAA All-State Team, while Katelyn Mumaw of Washington made the girls team.
