Preps Area Roundup -- Eagles knock off Cougars in semis

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Hedgesville scored six runs in the top of the 13th inning as the Eagles knocked off Jefferson 6-0 in the West Virginia Region II semifinals Thursday.

Brittany Boarman led off the 13th with a double for Hedgesville. After a walk and a Jess Mason sacrifice fly broke the scoreless tie, the next five batters reached base to blow the game open.

Paige Reed finished with three hits, while Boarman had two for Hedgesville (19-3). Jess Shirley pitched all 13 innings, gave up four hits and two walks while recording 24 strikeouts.

Desire Miller had two hits for Jefferson (22-5).

Southern Fulton 10, Northern Bedford 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Kelsey White threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Southern Fulton shut out Northern Bedford.

Brooke Whiteside had three hits, including a three-run homer and a triple, and Emily Garland also had three hits while Alexis Knisely had two RBIs for the Indians (11-6).

St. Maria Goretti 3, Bishop Walsh 1

Jay Donoghue had two hits, including a home run, as the Gaels defeated Bishop Walsh in the second round of the Maryland State Private School playoffs.

J.J. O'Neil struck out 10 for the Gaels (9-11), while Nic Martin collected two hits.

Goretti will play Avalon School on Saturday in the next round of the tournament.

Zack Snodderly had three hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs to lead Broadfording past Calvary Christian in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament semifinals.

Matt South had three hits and three RBIs, while Donnie Fritz had two hits for the Lions (6-6).

Brandon Kendell had two hits for the Eagles.

Bard, Hollenshead win PIAA District 5 titles

LOYSBURG, Pa. -- Southern Fulton girls Amy Bard and Jenna Hollenshead each won PIAA District 5 titles with school-record times on Wedesday.

Bard won the 400-meter dash in 1:01.10, and added a second-place finish in the 800 in 2:29.92.

Hollenshead won the 1,600 in 5:36.88 and also took sixth in the 800 in 2:35.09.

Caitie Mellott took second in the girls 100 (13.54) and fourth in the 200 (27.95). Lacey Beatty took third in the girls 3,200 (13:09.84). Crystal Appel took fourth in the girls shot put with a school-record throw of 32 feet, 4 1/2 inches. The Indians' girls 4x400 relay team finished sixth in 4:35.21.

Briar Kirk was the only boy to place in an event for Southern Fulton, taking sixth in the 3,200 (11:03.72).

McConnellsburg's Robert Shehan won the boys shot put (48-10 3/4) and placed third in the discus (143-2).

Pa. Independent School meet

Neb Osman won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:45.26, while Bubba Harris took first place in the discus with a throw of 133 feet, 6 inches for Mercersburg Academy's boys team on Wednesday. The Blue Storm finished fourth as a team.

Ellis Mays was second in the 800 (2:01.99) for the Blue Storm, while Harris was also third in the shot put (43-6 1/2) and Simion Daniels placed third in the high jump (5-10) and fourth in the 200 (23.60). The Mercersburg 4x100 relay team placed fourth in 46.22 seconds, while Troy Harrison finished fifth in the 100 (11.69) and Mike Lorensten was fifth in the pole vault (11-0).

Mercersburg's girls finished in seventh place. The Blue Storm were led by second-place finishes from Kearsten Cubit in the 400 (1:01.50), Paige Summers in the discus (98-9) and Asia Walker in the long jump (16-1 3/4).
