Miriam Camilla (Springer) Straley, 87, of Hagerstown, formerly of Oak Ridge Apartments, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Somerford Assisted Living in Hagerstown, which has been her home for the past six years.

Born on Dec. 7, 1921, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Bessie E. (Jones) Springer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Straley; five sisters, Edna Kinzer, Dorothy Petre, Ruth Grantham, Lutie Alter and Arlene Hetzel; two brothers, Ira Springer and Joseph Springer; and her stepmother, Sadie Springer.


They had no children.

She retired from Ross Garment in Hagerstown.

She was active in the Red Men for a number of years and a member of the Red Feather Council 59 and Degree of Pocahontas.

She graduated in 1939 from Hagerstown High School.

She is survived by her sister, Jane Rinehart of Greencastle; nephews, Wesley Straley of Rockford, Ill., H. Duane Kinzer of Greencastle, Lynn Grantham of Leland, N.C., Wayne Rinehart of Hagerstown and Mark Springer of Big Pool; nieces, Jo Ellen Daley of Greencastle, Nancy Grantham of Newburyport, Mass., and Martha Mauck of Frederick. Also special friends, Billie Brown, Roberta Thomas, Reba Spickler, Mary Vera, Virginia Altman and members of the Red Feather Council 59.

Special thanks to the staff and caregivers of Somerford Assisted Living, and to Hospice of Washington County.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Rev. Louis L. Emerick officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
