SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - C. Graydon Schlichter, 92, of 600 E. Orange St., Shippensburg, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at the Shippensburg Health Care Center.

Born June 5, 1916, in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late John B. and Carrie B. Weicht Schlichter.

He was a graduate of Chambersburg High School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939, where he was a member of the University Methodist Choir and is currently a member of the Alumni Association.


Upon graduation, he began employment with Mutual of New York as a field underwriter. He retired more than 60 years later.

He served as Franklin County Commissioner from 1956 until 1960, where he was chairman of the board the entire term. In the early 1940s, he served as president of the board of the former Hamilton Township School Board.

His professional organizations include twice president of the Franklin County Association of Life Underwriters; past director of the Pennsylvania State Association of Life Underwriters; life and qualifying member of Pennsylvania Leaders Roundtable; National Quality Award annual recognition since 1945; MONY Honor Clubs from 1944 until 1984; Million Dollar Roundtable; and was chosen Man of the Year by MONY's Harrisburg Agency in 1960.

Graydon was past president of the Chambersburg Lions Club; past president of the Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce; past board member and vice chairman of the original YMCA Building Fund Campaign; Franklin County Chairman of the Victory Loan Bond Drive in 1945; Christian chairman for Franklin County's United Jewish Appeal for two years; Chambersburg United Way solicitor for many years; past board member of Chambersburg Hospital; and past board member of the Chambersburg Area Development Corporation.

He is a member of the King Street United Brethren Church, where he was chorister of the Men's Bible Class and a former board member.

He was appointed to the Council of Trustees of Shippensburg University by Gov. Robert P. Casey in 1987, where he served two, six-year terms.

Graydon was a member of the Chambersburg County Club, taking up golf in his 50s. He enjoyed sports and history.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Louise Hopple Schlichter, who died Feb. 12, 1972. They were married April 25, 1943.

He is survived by his second wife, Grace T. Wolfrom Schlichter, whom he married June 25, 1977; two sons, Charles G. Schlichter Jr. and wife, Mary, of Chambersburg, and Thomas H. Schlichter of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three stepsons, Joel R. Wolfrom and wife, Karen, of West Chester, Kenneth E. Wolfrom and wife, Lynn, of Charleston, S.C., and Rolf B. Wolfrom and wife, Lauren, of Tequestra, Fla.; and two grandsons, C. Graydon Schlichter III of Los Angeles, Calif., and Edwin T. Schlichter of Spartanburg, S.C.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell, J. Byers and Kenneth Schlichter; a sister, Margretta Young; and a stepson, Lawrence Wolfrom.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. at King Street United Brethren Church, Chambersburg. The Revs. Paul Baker and Lester Stine will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Viewing will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., Shippensburg.
