North High hosts fashion show and art auction

The Art Club at North Hagerstown High School is hosting its third annual student fashion show and art auction in the North High auditorium at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 21.

It is a great opportunity for young artists to delve into the fashion field and to share their work. After the show, donated student art pieces such as prints, paintings and hand-sewn accessories will be auctioned.

The fashion show is a way to see unique, personal designs and view fashion on a more personal level, "instead of just thinking about fashion in terms of going to the store to buy whatever everyone else is wearing," said Brandy Merchant, North High art teacher and adviser to the art club. Merchant was the creative force behind the fashion show.

One of the designers bringing an individual perspective to fashion is Evan Snowden, 17, a junior at North, who has been a part of the school's fashion shows since the first show three years ago. While his designs are different each year, this time he said he "drew inspiration from the circus, especially the stiltwalkers." His design features bright colors, bold patterns, and arm and leg fabric flares.

Evan says working with models such as Dorothy Gertz, 17, a senior at North, "calls for a lot of compromise, as you don't want your model to feel uncomfortable walking on stage." Though Evan enjoys designing fashion pieces, he hopes to become a fashion photographer.

One emphasis in the show is the use of recycled materials in the fashion pieces. Students use various materials - tape, newspaper, candy wrappers, tin cans - to make their pieces original and earth-friendly.

The art club is always looking for donations of recycled materials to use for art projects. If you have any unwanted materials such as newspaper, magazines, wire, cardstock, picture frames or fabric and would like to see them used for creative purposes, please contact Brandy Merchant at merchbra@wcboe.k12.md.us.

All proceeds from the show go to the art club at North. It will be used to fund trips to view artists' works, such as seeing the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, as well as other art club activities.
