State to fix turn lanes in Williamsport

May 12, 2009

WILLIAMSPORT -- Work is under way on changing a troublesome set of traffic turn lanes at Potomac and Artizan streets, Mayor James G. McCleaf II said at the Williamsport Town Council meeting Monday night.

State highways officials decided to change the turn lanes near a Sheetz store where motorists could go straight or turn left in one of the lanes.

The problem is that people wanting to go straight often veer into a right turn-only lane to get around traffic waiting to turn left.

The state decided to change the lanes so the right-turn lane will also be available for those wanting to go straight. The other lane will be for left turns only.

The highways department has started changing the turn lanes and the work should be completed this week, McCleaf said.

Also on Monday, town council members decided to require motorists coming out of Byron Memorial Park to make right turns only.

The park entrance is near the intersection of Potomac and Artizan streets, and the turn restriction is designed to keep park traffic from crossing through the busy intersection, McCleaf said.
