Kids Alive Fest set for Saturday

Children's Village of Washington County Inc. will host its 18th annual Kids Alive Fest, Open House/Community-Safety Day Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Children's Village campus, 1546 Mount Aetna Road in Hagerstown.

Admission is free. The event will be held rain or shine.

Three area youngsters will be inducted into the Children's Village Life Safety Hall of Fame at a ceremony beginning at 12:15 p.m.

The students will be honored for implementing skills they learned and practiced at Children's Village to properly handle family emergencies.

Many activities are planned throughout the day.

The event sponsors are Hagerstown Trust Bank and Susquehanna Bank.

Children's Village is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free life-safety education to elementary school children in Washington County.

Library project

The Smithsburg Library is seeking photographs for a photography exhibition to be held in the library's community room for Pride Days celebration.


The exhibition is open to amateurs and professional photographers in the Smithsburg area. Entered prints, including optional mounting, matting, and/or framing, may be any size up to 16-by-20 inches. For more information, call Judith Ferro at 301-824-3741.

Smithsburg Middle School

It's time again for student-led conferences. Merit students are asked to put together a portfolio of their best work for the year. They will reflect on the work they select and then sit with a parent/guardian or teacher to share their thoughts and progress.

Conferences are tentatively scheduled for May 27. There will be a morning and afternoon session.

TOPS Chapter 462 records net loss for week

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 in Smithsburg had a net loss at its last meeting of more than 10 pounds

With a small group like this chapter, that is a big number. Area captain Parilee Barber visited the group and presented a program titled "Time to Create Lasting Change" to help chapter members get their minds right about losing weight.

The group meets Thursdays at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 51 S. Main St. in Smithsburg. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m.
