Preps Area Roundup -- Hubs do just enough to upset top-seeded Century

SYKESVILLE, Md. -- North Hagerstown pulled off the first upset in the Maryland 2A West Region playoffs on Monday with a 4-3 victory over No. 1-seed Century.

The Hubs (6-10-1) had only two hits, both by Aaron Stoner, including his double in the sventh inning and a his subsequent run in what proved to be the winning margin.

Century (9-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Jeremy Barron came on in relief and squelched the Knights rally.

Stoner also had a third-inning home run.

The Hubs will play at Middletown on Wednesday in the region semifinals.

HANOVER, Pa. -- Nathan Kauffman had two hits, including a three-run double in the top of the seventh to lead Waynesboro over South Western.

Cody Bumbaugh had two hits, while Jonathan Blubaugh had a two-run double for the Indians (13-5).

Nic Martin and Vince Turano had three hits each, while Connor Grimsley hit a two-run double as St. Maria Goretti beat McConnellsburg.

Will Murray had two hits and three RBIs, J.J. O'Neill had two hits and Aaron Wilkinson and Jay Donoghue had two RBIs each. Murray and O'Neill combined on a three-hitter for the Gaels (7-11).

Devon Pettyjohn had two hits for the Spartans.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Kenny Frederickson had four hits and two RBIs, while Pat Salvagno added three hits and drove in four runs for Grace Academy, which defeated CVCS in six innings in the first round of the MDCC playoffs.

Zack Morgan had three hits for the Knights (7-6, 7-4), while Sean Koontz added two hits and three RBIs and Keith Sandell and Matt Koontz each had two hits.

POOLESVILLE, Md. -- Hannah Leizear had two hits and two RBIs to lead Clear Spring, which knocked off Poolesville in a Md. Class 1A West quarterfinal game that was called after six innings due to lightning.

Leizear drove in Heather Schlotterbeck with a first-inning single, and followed in the fourth with a double to knock in Damara McDonough. McDonough and Meghan Price each had two hits and an RBI while Schlotterbeck also had two hits for Clear Spring.

Amber Forrest improved to 5-0 in the circle by pitching all six innings of three-hit ball with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Blazers travel to Fort Hill to play in the regional semifinals on Wednesday.

NEWVILLE, Pa. -- Delanie Dunham scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by Jess Miller in the bottom of the sixth as Chambersburg shut out Waynesboro in the semi-finals of the Mid-Penn Conference playoffs.

Emily Estep threw a complete game one-hitter with 16 strikeouts for the Trojans.

Taran Ashway had eight strikeouts for the Maidens (18-2).

Prep Track

BANGOR, Pa. -- The Faith Christian Academy boys' and girls' track teams each finished 3rd in their respective 42-team fields in the ACSI Mid Atlantic Regional meet held on Saturday.

Terel Roman led the Faith boys team with a second-place finish in both the 100-meter dash (11.5 seconds) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.5) and a fifth-place finish in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches). Roman also ran a leg in the first-place 4x100 relay team which also included Ethan Price, Derek Apple and Tyler Gibson. Zach Gates finished second in the 3,200 (11:12.0) and sixth in the 1,600 (5:02.0).

Nicole Deneseus led the girls by setting a new meet record in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 3 inches. She also placed third in the 400 (1:07.0) and was part of the fourth-place 4x100 relay team which also included Jessie Alexander, Jackie Solenberger and Sheila Grammo. Grammo also won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 18.9 seconds.
