Girl celebrates birthday by collecting gifts for animals

May 10, 2009

Madison Wetzel's 10th birthday party presented her with the opportunity to express how she feels about animals. Instead of asking for the newest gadget or toy, she asked friends to bring animal-related gifts that she would donate to the The Humane Society of Washington County.

On April 22, Madison, accompanied by her father, Randy Wetzel, and 5-year-old brother, Grant, presented Humane Society Executive Director Paul Miller with her gifts to homeless animals. With her arms filled with food, treats and toys, Madison smiled broadly.

"Can we go see the dogs now?" she asked, eager to see the animals that would be enjoying her birthday gifts.

When asked what motivated her to have a party for pets instead of herself, Madison said, "Well, I love animals!"

"Madison has always loved animals, so I wasn't surprised when she wanted to do this for the animals," Randy Wetzel said.

Miller was impressed.

"This was a really nice thing for Madison to do for the animals," Miller said. "I think she must have pointed partygoers to our Web site because all of the items she brought in are things we can use right now."

The Humane Society of Washington County is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. The organization's Web site is www.hswcmd.org.
