South Hagerstown's Chelsea Showe pitched a two-hitter as the Rebels defeated Middletown 5-2 in the first round of the Maryland 2A West playoffs Friday.

South (6-12) will play at second-seeded Clarksburg on Monday at 4 p.m. in the region quarterfinals.

"The defense came out and played really well today," said Showe, who gave up only one earned run and no walks. "That really helped me out. I pitched with a lot of confidence. I just threw my game. I hit my spots. I think I did really well. My sister, Courtney, is the catcher and she helped me out by calling a good game."

Senior shortstop Desiree Giffin, who led Washington County with her .540 batting average in the regular season, had two hits, two steals and an RBI for the Rebels.

"Our bats came around towards the end," Giffin said. "We got some good clutch hits, when we needed them. My hitting has come around this year. My team has helped me to keep myself up. We had good defense today. If we play like today, I don't have any doubts about our potential in the playoffs. As long as we don't make errors, we will be OK."

South took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Giffin came home on an infield error.

Middletown (4-10) took a 2-1 lead in the second when Kelli Thomas banged a two-run homer to left.

The Rebels took the lead for good at 3-2 in the third when Giffin and Elisabeth Sharpe both scored on Katie Forsythe's single to center.

South extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Destanie Agee scored on Giffin's single to right. The Rebels got their final run in the seventh when Sharpe came home on a groundout by Megan Sneckenberger.

"We hit the ball well, we played defense well and Chelsea Showe pitched a good game," South coach Angie McQuillen said. "Chelsea threw strikes, got ahead in the count and was able to pitch her game. Her changeup was working real well. We have been working hard in practice. Our seniors knew that we either had to get it done or go home."
