Potpie dinner fundraiser

Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St. in Hagerstown, is having a potpie dinner fundraiser Saturday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Come and enjoy ham, chicken, or beef potpie, peas, coleslaw, applesauce and a drink. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 11. Desserts will be available for purchase. Call 301-797-6567 for tickets. Get your tickets early. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

School to host Henry's Hustle and Carnival

On Saturday, May 16, Maugansville Elementary School will host "Henry's Hustle and Carnival."

All proceeds are to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer in honor of Henry Scheck and the Scheck family. Henry was 4 years old and recently passed away. Visit for more information. The activities and times are as follows:

o Red Cross blood drive, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school cafeteria


o One-mile run -- registration is at 9:15 a.m. and the run starts at 10 a.m.

o Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food, bake sale, cakewalk, moon bounces, dunk tank, carnival games, face painting and temporary tattoos for the kids.

On Sunday, May 17, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Hair Cuttery on Garland Groh Boulevard will be having a Cut-a-thon. Haircuts are a $10 donation, with all proceeds being donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand in honor of Henry.

Please bring the whole family. Event will be held in rain or shine.

Elks hold Teenagers of the Year Awards

Elks Lodge 378 held its Teenagers of the Year Awards Dinner May 6. A boy and a girl from each high school were recognized for their achievements:

Boonsboro High School -- Tayler C. Wennick, Grant E. Brown; Clear Spring -- Emily M. Pinkham, Zachery D. Repp; Hancock -- Jill R. Helmstetter, James L. Sornson; North Hagerstown -- Taryn H. Shank, Jeremiah I. Cress; St. Maria Goretti -- Maria M. Espiridion, Brendan R. Engle; Smithsburg -- Lacy M. Doane, Steve M. Kretzer, Jr.; South Hagerstown -- Ashley N. Bockstanz, Gustavo Barbosa; Williamsport -- Rachel V. Jernigan, Grant J. Smith

Proclamations were presented to each of the students by Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II, Washington County Commissioner William J. Wivell, State Sen. Donald F. Munson and by a representative of Gov. Martin O'Malley. Citations were awarded to each student by a representative of Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett. David L. Kauffman, chairman of the trustees of the Elks Lodge, presented a monetary award to each student.
