Waynesboro police warn of scam

May 08, 2009

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- A man visited the Waynesboro Police Department Tuesday with a letter he received from "RD Services" saying they were connected Reader Digest Sweepstakes and he was the third-prize winner of $150,000, according to a police department press release.

"RD Services" sent the man a check for $3,050.75, police said.

The man found the check routing number was to a different bank than on the check and the name on the check was for PRIME Contractors of Houston, police said.

All information was bogus, so the man brought the information to the Waynesboro Police Department. The man said the phone number provided was Canadian.

This has been a reoccurring scam in the area for the past few weeks, police said.

Police ask people to take extra precautions when an organization advises you have won a prize and they require you to pay them money to collect a larger prize. They ask that scams of this nature be reported to local police departments.
