Jean Hoke Nye, 82

Winifred "Jean" (Hoke) Nye, 82, of The Terrace in Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Quincy United Methodist Home in Quincy, Pa.

Born Oct. 20, 1926, in Shickshinny, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Viola (Ponton) Hoke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Nye, on Feb. 4, 2001, and two brothers, Jesse Justin "Bussie" Hoke and John Calvin Hoke.

She was a member of the Chambersburg High School class of 1945.

Following her high school graduation, she moved to Baltimore, Md., where she worked for the federal government and attended Peabody Conservatory.

Later, after attending Hagerstown Community College and Shippensburg University, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Social Services. She retired in 1982.

Her interest in music and the stage led her to join a number of performing organizations throughout her life, including the Handel Choir in Baltimore, the Chambersburg Community Theater, Hagerstown Choral Arts and the Conococheague Players.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown.

She is survived by three daughters, Cara (Nye) York of Heeney, Colo., Dana B. Schaffner of Cascade, Md., and Jessica D. Nye of Hagerstown; three sons, Robert P. Nye Jr. of Reading, Pa., Albert Nye of Orbisonia, Pa., and Barry L. Bland of Greencastle, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1010 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall at St. John's.
