BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. --Â Franklin Herbert Hess, 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 4, 1940, in Hancock, Md., he was the son of the late William H. and Maud V. Brannon Hess.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard A. Hess; and one grandchild, Alisa C. Hess.

He was a retired union carpenter and a 40-year member of Carpenters Union Local 340, and a member of Royal Order of Moose Lodge 1483 and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of AARP and a devoted member of Roy Hovermale's Coffee Club.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara K. Wilson Hess; two sons, Franklin H. Hess II and James W. Hess, both of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Emeline V. Golden of Pennsylvania, Debra A. Ray of Hancock and Margaret F. Kump of Gore, Va.; eight brothers, William H. Hess Jr. of Clayton, Del., Edward B. Hess of Norfolk, Va., John K. Hess and Robert L. Hess, both of Berkeley Springs, David B. Hess of Hedgesville, W.Va., Joseph L. Hess and Samuel C. Hess, both of Hancock, and Michael J. Hess of Westminster, Md.; eight grandchildren, Benjamin Hess, Franklin Hess III, Kristen Hess, David Hess, Katlynn Hess, James Hess II, Robert Hess and Britney Hess; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends will be received Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with services Friday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Frankie Revell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.
