Stanley Robert Brown Sr., age 81, formerly of Hagerstown, Md., and a resident of Chambersburg, Pa., died Saturday, May 2, 2009, after a lengthy illness at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa.

Born July 1, 1927, in Wolfsville, Md., he was the son of the late Stanley W. Brown and Gladys Cline-Brown.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Ocean Theater in World War II and earning four Battle Stars.

He worked on the Western Maryland Railroad from 1950 to 1960, and was the co-owner of the "Local Cab Company" and also the owner of the Hagerstown Ice Company. He joined the Maryland Correctional System in June of 1960 and was stationed at the Hagerstown Prison until his retirement in 1981 with the rank of Major of Correction.


He was a former member of Fourth Street Church of the Brethren in Chambersburg and a graduate of Clear Spring High School.

He was a member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mildred L. Monninger Brown; six children, Wanda Sue Lockbaum, Roberta Ann Mills, Stanley R. Brown Jr., Philip J. Brown, David L. Brown and Jo Ellen Hilgeman; three stepchildren, Karen K. Diller, Larry Stockslager and Gary Stockslager; one brother, Gerald Brown; one sister, May Wolfe; one stepsister, Gladys Nance; one stepbrother, John Smetzer; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. Pastor Dennis Whitmore will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown with military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Arrangements are being handled by Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Clear Spring.
