Brown paces Mount

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Smithsburg graduate Chad Brown led the Mount St. Mary's men to a sixth-place finish at the Northeast Conference championships.

Brown placed second in the 100-meter dash in 10.79 seconds and third in the 200 in 21.95.

Arumugam 4th in 5,000

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- MIT junior Hemu Arumugam, the former North Hagerstown High School star, placed fourth in the men's 5,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 4.11 seconds at the NCAA New England Division III championships.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Mia Doyle won her first consolation match after falling in the first round to stay alive at the NJCAA championships.

Her sister, Tessa Doyle, also lost in the first round.

The Doyles also are competing as a doubles team.

Pinesburg tourney registration

The Pinesburg Memorial Day Classic is accepting teams for a 24-team tournament to be held May 23-25 at the Pinesburg Softball Complex.

The tournament is open to the first 24 teams that register, guaranteeing five games with all teams advancing to elimination brackets.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to an upper bracket, while the second two teams will be placed in a lower bracket. The teams winning each of those brackets will receive cash awards.

Entry fee is $225. The tournament will be played under the one-up home run rule and each team will be required to hit its own .44-core balls.
