Park Circle fountain dedicated

May 05, 2009

HAGERSTOWN -- Hagerstown city officials formally dedicated the fountain at Park Circle on Tuesday before about 60 onlookers.

Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and Denise Pennington, president of the Hagerstown Garden Club, were among the speakers who praised a collaboration between city staff and the garden club for making the project possible.

"Never before in the history of Hagerstown have I seen something happen so fast," Bruchey said of the project, which took a little more than a month to complete.

Pennington called the dedication a "happy, victorious day."

Research provided by Hagerstown Garden Club member Christine Tischer suggests that the four women on the fountain are "water maidens or Nyads, and they have the French names Lasaone, Veronic, Laloire and Maranie, which are rivers and valleys in France.

Karen Giffin, community affairs director for the City of Hagerstown, said the project cost about $52,000. About $31,000 of that cost was covered by private donations, she said. Community Development Block Grants paid the remaining $21,000.
