Preps Area Roundup -- County softball teams begin playoffs Friday

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held the state softball playoff draw on Tuesday, and six of the seven Washington County teams will be in first-round action Friday.

In Class 1A West, No. 12-seed Clear Spring will travel to No. 5-seed Northern Garrett, No. 13-seed Williamsport will travel to No. 4-seed Poolesville, No. 11-seed Smithsburg will travel to No. 6-seed Brunswick and No. 7-seed Hancock will host No. 10-seed Boonsboro.

In Class 2A West, No. 10 South Hagerstown will travel to No. 7-seed Middletown on Friday. No. 4-seed North Hagerstown -- the only county team with a bye to the quarterfinals -- will host No. 5-seed Francis Scott Key on Monday.

The state baseball playoff draw will be held today.

No. 1 Waynesboro 7, East Penn 0

ENOLA, Pa. -- Taryn Ashway pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Waynesboro shut out East Pennsboro in a Mid-Penn Colonial game.


Dani Miller had three hits for the Maidens (17-1, 11-0), while Erin Lisko and Meghan Decker each had two hits and three RBIs and Megan Baker had two hits and an RBI.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Tyler McDonald pitched a shutout with five strikeouts to beat Altoona (5-5).

Jordan Riley had two RBIs for Chambersburg (11-4).

St. James 16, Georgetown Day 12

WASHINGTON -- Caroline Salisbury had eight goals to lead Saint James to the victory.

Anna Morrow had two goals and three assists for the Saints (12-2), while Courtney Peterson had two goals and Rachel Herrera, Margaret Bacon, Mary Bacon and Jina Hontz each scored one. Sarah Gosling had 12 saves in the win.

Frederick 19, South 10

Lauren Marriner had five goals for South Hagerstown in the Rebels' loss to Frederick.

Victoria Robinson added three goals for the Rebels (0-12) while Sarah Burgan and Anna Blevins each scored a goal.
