CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mrs. Betty M. (McClain) Martin, 81, a resident of Providence Place of Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of 228 Landis Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., entered into rest at 1:21 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Providence Place. She was in failing health for the past several years and critically ill for the past week.

She was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Sabillasville, Md. She was the daughter of the late Lewis N. and Loretta M. (Harbaugh) McClain.

She lived her early life in Sabillasville.

Mrs. Martin graduated from Thurmont High School with the class of 1943.

She and her late husband, Mr. Lester C. Martin, were married Jan. 25, 1947, in Smithsburg, Md. They moved to the Landis Avenue address in 1992. She entered Providence Place April 2004. Mr. Martin died Jan. 31, 2009.


Mrs. Martin was employed by Gearhart's Pharmacy in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., as a pharmacist's assistant and clerk. Prior to retiring in 1989, she worked at Thrift Drug Store in Waynesboro as a clerk.

She attended Apostolic Church of Greenstone and was a life member of the Fountaindale Volunteer Fire Company.

Mrs. Martin enjoyed collecting paperweights and buttons.

She is survived by two sons, Carroll "Duke" Martin of Fairfield, Pa., and David M. Martin of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Charlotte Milligan of Chambersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Eugene M. Cline officiating. Burial will be in Fountaindale Union Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
