BOONSBORO - Evelyn Mae May, 92, of 18534 Lappans Road, Boonsboro, Md., died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at home after a prolonged battle with several health conditions. She died peacefully surrounded by her loving children.

Born Jan. 1, 1917, on Buena Vista Avenue in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles Richard and Melinda Missouri (Eyerly) Gladhill.

Evelyn was the widow of Charles William May, who died Oct. 8, 1989.

Evelyn graduated from Winter Street School in Hagerstown and was first employed by Interwoven in Hagerstown. Later, she was the wonderful cook at Woodpoint Grill, from which she retired in 1995 at the age of 78.


She was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren.

Besides her deep devotion and love for her family, she enjoyed the simple things of life: reading, sewing, singing, and playing jigsaw and word search puzzles. Her favorite pastimes were playing Parcheesi and reading the Bible.

Evelyn is survived by her loving daughter, Melinda Belle May, with whom she lived in Boonsboro; two devoted sons, Robert Earl May and wife, Karin, of Boonsboro, and James Edward May and wife, Brenda, of Hagerstown; and caring daughter-in-law, Linda May of Fairplay.

She is also survived by granddaughters, Tina Marie Strite and husband, Wayne, of Clear Spring, Karen Lynn Bingaman and husband, Nathan, of Mont Alto, Pa., and Cheryl Ann May of Mont Alto; grandsons, Donald Frederick May and girlfriend, April, of Fredericksburg, Va., Richard Kevin May of Fairplay, Md., and Todd Matthew May and wife, Donna, of Hagerstown; four great-granddaughters, Jamie Lynn Strite of Boonsboro, Jodie Marie Stuller and husband, William, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Hannah Madison Bingaman of Mont Alto, Pa., and Sarah Elizabeth May of Fredericksburg; two great-grandsons, Dylan Matthew Griffin of Mont Alto and Darren Andrew May of Williamsport; one great-great-grandson, Aidan William Stuller of Martinsburg; one stepgranddaughter, Cathy Sellar and husband, Richard, of Waynesboro, Pa.; one stepgrandson, Mike Hanlon and wife, Brenda, of Hagerstown; two stepgreat-granddaughters, Kristina Margaret Marie Vanoy of Hagerstown and Carli Amelia Sellar of Waynesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by two sons, Clyde Richard May, who was killed in a car accident in 1954 at the age of 19, and Charles Frederick May, who died after a courageous battle with lymphoma in 2008.

Evelyn was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Elenora Elliott and Violet Ataline Fox; seven brothers, Clarence Richard Gladhill, John Raymond Gladhill, Howard Gladhill, Warren Edward Gladhill, Gerald William Gladhill, Robert Leroy Gladhill and Donald Glenn Gladhill. She was the last surviving member of her family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md. Pastor Joy E. Zepp will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.
