CARLISLE, Pa. -- Phyllis W. Cunningham, 80, of Carlisle, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at her home.

Born July 17, 1928, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late John A. and Lottie (Bowers) Sampsell.

Phyllis was the widow of William F. Cunningham, who died June 18, 2001.

She was a 1945 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She worked for the former Town & Country department store in Carlisle, which later became Kmart for a combined 20 years of service.

Phyllis was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carlisle, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Sunday school class, the Bible study class and the Stephen's Ministry.


She was a faithful supporter of the Samaritan Fellowship, the Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity, all of Carlisle. She formerly volunteered for Safe Harbor in Carlisle and was a former Carlisle High School Band Booster.

Phyllis was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Clarence Sampsell; and one sister, Genevieve Oliver.

She is survived by four sons, Dennis E., of Carlisle, Darryl W., of Williamsburg, Va., David B. of Dunedin, Fla., and Derek W., of Franklin, Tenn.; two daughters, Deborah R. Judd and Donna S. Myers, both of Carlisle; one sister, Arvella Avey of Hagerstown; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Allen, John and Jeremy Judd, Nikki Rivera, and Danielle, Brian, Aaron, Adam, Deanna and Drake Cunningham; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 45 S. West St., Carlisle, with the Rev. Bruce E. Fensterbush and the Rev. Edward T. D'Agostino officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.

A viewing will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle; and Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of the services at the church.
