BOONSBORO, Md. - Ray Franklin Swope, 79, of Boonsboro, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Ray was born Sept. 30, 1929 in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and was the son of the late Samuel Franklin and Blanche Lottie Breeden Swope.

He was employed as a brick mason with Swope Construction Inc. until his retirement.

Ray was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Bakersville.

Ray was a member of Conococheague Tribe 84 IO Red Men, Williamsport, Aerie 694 FO Eagles and a former member of Hagerstown Lodge 212 LO Moose, both of Hagerstown.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elaine E. Giffin Swope; five daughters, Jennifer M. Mason Paul and her husband, Phil, Helen G. Wiles and her husband, Brian, both of Hagerstown, Paula J. Webb and her husband, Michael, Boonsboro, Brenda K. Gigeous and her husband, Steve, Williamsport, and Vicki J. Swope and her husband, Keith, Clear Spring; two sons, Terry R. Swope and his wife, Diane, Slanesville, W.Va., and Jeffrey G. Swope and his wife, Theresa, of Hagerstown; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Gross; and two brothers, Charles Swope and Harold Swope.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Bakersville, with the Revs. John Torrence, Richard Hembrock and Darrell Layman officiating.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements will be with Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.
