Area Roundup -- Oates wins first Maryland Mountain Marathon

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Hagerstown's Doug Oates pulled away from the field to win the first Mountain Maryland Marathon in a time of 2:44:04 on Sunday.

Oates, 30, defeated Paul Walters of Annapolis, Md., by more than 14 minutes to win the $1,000 first prize.

Ray Jackson Jr. of Hagerstown ran a 4:06:47 to finish 28th whild Joel Huffer of Williamsport took 41st (4:23:06) and Steve Milburn of Williamsport and Shawn Cutsail of Hagerstown finished 51st and 52nd (4:38:57).

Mark Delaney took eighth in the half-marathon in 1:33:56, while Darrell Hull was 34th (1:50:39) and Becky Orndorff was 41st (1:53:15).

HCC 12-20, Prince George's 1-1

LARGO, Md. -- Neil Callahan and Matt Greene each homered in the six-run sixth inning to lift Hagerstown Community College to a victory in the opener of a doubleheader sweep over Prince George's.

The sweep moved the Hawks to 31-12 for their sixth straight 30-win season.

Callahan's three-run home run, followed by Greene's two-run shot, helped the Hawks close out the game by the mercy rule.

Billy Hayes pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Callahan finished with three hits and five RBIs while Greene and Zach Smith had two hits and two RBIs each.

In the nightcap, HCC scored 11 runs in the seventh inning, with the help of six walks and three hit batsmen, to complete the sweep. The Hawks received 17 walks and were hit seven times in the game.

Daniel Heatwole, Zach Cook and Kyle Briggs had two hits and three RBIs each, while Taylor Sidler added two hist and an RBI.

Shepherd wins WVIAC North

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Brian Collins went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lift Shepherd University to a 3-1 win over Seton Hill in the opener of a doubleheader split on Sunday that allowed the Rams to clinch WVIAC Northern Division title.

Shepherd (26-15, 12-2) dropped a 9-1 decision in the nightcap.

The Rams won the game and the division with two runs in the third inning when Collins singled to drive in the go-ahead run and Chris Szafran added insurance with a sacrifice fly.

Collins improve to 2-0 by combining on a three-hitter with Kenny Reisinger. Collins allowed three hits while striking out six and walking two in five innings.

The Griffins scored seven run in the fourth to pull away in the nightcap. Tyler Beard, of Williamsport, had two hits for Shepherd.

On Saturday, Shepherd put itself in position to clinch the North title by scoring 27 runs in a 19-2, 8-5 sweep of Seton Hill.

Waynesboro's Nathan Minnich had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the Rams in the opener, while Beard added two hits and four RBIs. Szafran, Beard and Minnich had two hits each in the nightcap.

Mount's Fowler earns win, save

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- South Hagertown graduate Jamie Fowler won her 10th game of the season and picked up her first save as Mount Saint Mary's swept Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday in a Northeastern Conference softball doubleheader.

Fowler allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in a complete game for a 3-2 win the opener. She came on in the seventh in the nightcap to record the final two outs, including one strikeout, to preserve a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd 8-7, Davis & Elkins 0-2

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Tricia Bettura tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Shepherd University to a victory in the opener Sunday of a doubleheader sweep of Davis & Elkins.

Amy Edmondson (went 3-for-3 with a homer to lead the Rams (19-16, 13-9), while Bettura added two hits and an RBI.

Hedgesville's Chelsie Oals was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the Rams in the nightcap. Amber Dudek added three hits, while Caitlin Davis added a pair of hits and drove in four runs.

Shepherd finishes sixth

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Shepherd University shot a two-day total of 676 to finish sixth in the nine-team West Virginia Wesleyan College Invitational.

Ohio Valley won the event by shooting 612.

Aaron Stenta fired a two-round total of 164 to tie for 25th place and lead the Rams. Chris Gilkey followed with a 171 to tie for 32nd place. Jeremy Thompson shot a 172 (T-35th), Jon Agee had 176 (T-37th), and Matt Deaner added a 178 (T-40th).
