Wildcats girls strut their stuff

April 17, 2009|By ANDREW MASON

If the Maryland state meet in late May is the "Holy Grail" of local track and field, the Williamsport girls seem to be pointed in the right direction on their quest for a second straight Class 1A team title.

The Wildcats won nine of the 14 events at the 30th annual Rebel Relays at South Hagerstown on Friday, and racked up a winning total of 124 points. North Hagerstown was second (87), Smithsburg was third (72) and Walkersville was fourth (57).

"At this time of the year, you always look to improve and take those next little steps to the Holy Grail," Williamsport coach John Bailey said. "(The Rebel Relays) is one of those meets where you want to have some fun, but you can also look at things for down the road, putting kids in different places and seeing how they do."

Senior star Cayla Broadwater carried the Wildcats to titles in the long, triple and high jumps -- all two-person events -- with her respective leaps of 17 feet, 5 1/2 inches, 34-3 1/2 and 5-4.

She teamed with Amy Taylor to win the triple jump in a meet-record 66-0, and teamed with Brittany Weaver to win the long jump in a meet-record 33-0 1/2.

"Cayla was more excited about Brittany Weaver, who jumped a new personal best (15-7)," Bailey said.

Morgan Keplinger, another Williamsport senior, ran legs of the winning distance-medley relay (13:49.7) and 4x400 (4:10.3) and also won the Dr. James Banks Open 800 (2:26.1), the meet's only nonrelay event.

"The Rebel Relays are always fun. You get to do different stuff," Keplinger said. "There are a lot of seniors on our team and this was our last Rebel Relays. We wanted to go out with a bang."

Renee Phillips cruised for runner-up North, anchoring the Hubs to victories in the 4x100 (52.1) and 4x200 (1:51.5).

"It wasn't really challenging. You want people who are faster than you to make you go faster, and that really wasn't here for me," Phillips said. "But it was exciting. I just wanted to help my team out."

Walkersville edged Middletown 82-81 for the boys team title, while Smithsburg was third (74) and Williamsport was fourth (64).

The Williamsport boys shattered their own meet record in the distance medley relay by 8 seconds in the meet's first race. The team of Justin Gardenhour (400), Mark Oliver (800), Naseem Haje (1,200) and Michael Lilley (1,600) beat runner-up Smithsburg by more than a half-minute in 10:52.8.

"Our goal was just to get under 11," said Lilley, who took them there with an impressive 4:29 anchor split. "It was such a hot day, and I was all by myself so 4:29 is really good. I definitely think I could run 4:24 or 4:25 if I was with someone."

Boonsboro's Jordan Acton won the boys open 800 in 2:05.0.
