HANCOCK -- The third annual Evening in Hancock fundraising benefit for the Hancock Arts Council on Friday was a sold-out event.

Many tickets were purchased at the door for the buffet dinner and an evening of entertainment at the Park-N-Dine Restaurant, said Sinclair Hamilton, chairman of the arts council and a Hancock town councilman.

Proceeds from the event will go toward improvements for the Hancock Community Center Stage and performance area at 126 High St.

Hamilton said the funds also will help with programming during the rest of the year, such as the arts council's drama camp for middle and high school students, the Summer in the Park concert series and the seventh annual Barge Bash, which is scheduled for June 27 and sponsored this year for the first time by the arts council.

Hancock Mayor Daniel A. Murphy said he was pleased with the arts council's progress.

"This is what we've been trying to do since 2001 -- everything involving the arts like Berkeley Springs," Murphy said.

Berkeley Springs, W.Va., residents Noberta Schoene and Bill Lands are supporters of the Hancock Arts Council and have attended the Evening in Hancock event all three years.

"We support both the Berkeley Springs (Morgan Arts Council) and the Hancock arts councils and have seen them grow," Schoene said.

Hancock Town Manager David Smith said the Hancock Arts Council "is very successful and is doing more each year."

Entertainment was provided by the following:

o Music de Cuisine by Mike Kligerman and JoAnne Michael

o Two Guitars with Jim Salman and Jim Fredo

o Poetry by Ann Knox, Karen Randlev and Dina Coe

o "American Triptych," a collaboration of poems by Carl Sandburg and music by an American composer, featuring John Douglas, Samantha Redston, Linda Whitesitt and Pat Springer

o Berkeley Swings, a jazz combo

o A reading of "A Revealing Short Story" by Phil Edwards

o Music by the Arts Council Band and Friends
