Boonsboro rocks to own hit parade

April 16, 2009|By JACK HILL III

Boonsboro used an eight-run third inning and took advantage of 10 errors on Thursday to score a 17-5 victory over South Hagerstown in a Washington County softball game.

"We made too many mistakes," South Hagerstown coach Angie McQuillen said.

After scoring a run in the second on a pair of throwing errors, Boonsboro (5-4) unloaded in the eight-run third for a 9-0 lead.

Haley Payne's RBI double and Breanne Lohman's two-run single accounted for the Warriors' first three runs. The next three Boonsboro runs crossed with the help of errors. Amber Welch's RBI infield single and Lauren Abbott's RBI double closed out the scoring binge.

"We stepped up," Boonsboro coach Lisa Lewis said. "We timed the pitcher well and we used the hitting techniques that we worked on in practice. Once we really relax in the box and focus on the things that we need to work on, it really helped us dominate that inning."

Lohman led Boonsboro with three hits, including two home runs, and six RBIs.

"Everything is starting to click," Lohman said. "I am finally getting my timing down with my swings. I was finally hitting the ball."

Lewis said she can see Lohman's hard work is starting to pay off.

"Once Breanne got in the batter's box, she relaxed and she made sure that her swing was real good," Lewis said. "She is a strong power hitter. But she doesn't look to be a power hitter. She looks to be a good base hitter."

Boonsboro is following Lohman's lead.

"I think we are finally starting to come together as a team," Lohman said. "From here, we are going to get better. I don't think we have any weak spots in our lineup."

Eight of the Warriors' nine starters collected hits in 16-hit attack.

Courtney Alves added three hits for Boonsboro. Jess Bowers had both of her hits in Boonsboro's eight-run inning. Winning pitcher Welch, Abbott and Payne added two hits apiece for the Warriors.

Desiree Giffin had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for South Hagerstown (3-6). Elisabeth Sharpe added two hits for the Rebels.
