Charles K. "Chuck" Emery, 78

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Charles Kennedy "Chuck" Emery, 78, of 9216 Oyer Drive, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center.

Born Aug. 1, 1930, in Pottstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Arthur E. Emery and Ruth L. Kennedy Emery.

He was a 1948 graduate of Pottstown High School. He received his bachelor of science degree in education from Millersville State Teacher's College in 1952.

He was employed as an industrial arts teacher for Waynesboro School District at West Junior High and later Antietam Middle School, from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. While teaching, he coached football and basketball at Washington Township High School, and later at Waynesboro Junior and Senior High schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was an ordnance instructor at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where he sang in the church choir, had served on church council and was a member of the hand bell choir.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, BPO Elks Lodge 731, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association, Waynesboro Country Club, South Chapter AARP 2977 and former member of Waynesboro Studio Club, all of Waynesboro; and National AARP. He served on the board of directors of Waynesboro Community Concert Association.

He was a bass singer, singing in area minstrel shows, for Mercersburg (Pa.) Area Community Chorus, Waynesboro Area Education Association Teachers Productions, and for weddings and funerals.

He was a tennis player, holding the title of Waynesboro Tennis Champion.

He is survived by his wife of more than 53 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Snively Emery; two daughters, Holly E. Carey of Waynesboro and Wendy E. Eigenbrode of Mercersburg; one son, Scott C. Emery of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and AFS exchange daughter, Adrienne Dumaresa Fawcett of Cape Town, South Africa.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mabel Beers Emery.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. Pastor Thomas Eifert will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
