Book fair planned

Salem Avenue Elementary School will hold a book fair April 20 to 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

On Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., the book fair will feature a community event with contests, activities and refreshments. Proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase books for classroom libraries.

New officers were elected to serve the PTA for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

The new officers are Ann Parker, president; Mary Lou Harnish, vice president; Jen Johnson, secretary; Mike Hendershot, treasurer; and Jill Corderman and Amy Hendershot, fundraising chairpersons.

On May 5, a representative from the Washington County Health Department will discuss "Safe Routes to School." The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Salem Avenue parents are encouraged to attend.


Salvation Army

On Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m., The Salvation Army will host its annual recognition dinner for those who volunteered their time in the last year. The dinner will be at Next Dimensions on Alternate U.S. 40 in Funkstown.

The speaker for the event will be Kelly Wright, formerly from Hagerstown and an anchor for Fox News.

Tickets must be purchased prior to the event and will not be available at the door. Stop by The Salvation Army at 534 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown. Tickets cost $20.

Church plans dinner

The Adult Choir of Washington Square United Methodist Church will hold its annual pork and sauerkraut family dinner Saturday, May 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the church at 538 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

The all-you-can-eat dinner includes mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, applesauce, rolls, drinks and dessert.

Tickets cost $8 for adults, $4 for those ages 6 to 10, and $2 for those ages 3 to 5. Those 2 and younger will be admitted free.

Advance tickets and reservations are available from choir members or by contacting the church at 301-739-2653 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Tickets will be available at the door, but reservations are recommended.

Meals will be available for eating in or carrying out. The church's LeFew Fellowship Hall is accessible from the parking lot at the rear of the church. The hall is handicapped-accessible.

Senior Softball League

The Washington County Senior Softball League will hold practice and registration Monday, April 20, for all Washington County citizens over the age 50.

Practices will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the City Park ballfields.

The season opener will be Monday, May 18.

Womens Club

The public is invited to a charity card party to benefit Holly Place, at the Women's Club Wednesday, April 22, at noon. Have lunch, relax and play any card or board game, or just come for lunch. The event costs $12. Reservations can be made by calling the Women's Club at 301-739-0870.

Bark for Life

The American Cancer Society's Bark For Life will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Hagerstown Fairgrounds Park.

The event is a noncompetitive dog walk fundraising event. Money raised will be included in the annual Relay For Life event total.

There is a $20 per dog registration fee.
