SMITHSBURG -- With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Katie Sprecher hit a sacrifice fly to left field to lift Smithsburg to a 3-2 victory over Williamsport in MVAL Antietam softball action Monday.

"It was a good game for both teams," said Smithsburg coach Brian Getz, whose team improved to 4-3 (2-2). "It really was a nailbiter. Williamsport is a tough team. They always give us a good game. Stevey Markovich made a couple of great catches on two fly balls hit to deep center by (Williamsport's) Alexis Fisher."

Getz also said he was impressed with Leopards senior pitcher Bethany Garnand, who recorded nine of her 15 strikeouts in the first three innings.

"Williamsport had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the first inning," Getz said. "But Bethany came back to get three strikeouts and that was a confidence-builder."

Garnand (4-3) allowed just one earned run as she fired a five-hitter and came out on top of a pitchers' duel with Williamsport senior Kelly Beard. Beard struck out 12 in 7 1/3 innings as she gave up only one walk, two earned runs and six hits.

"We played strong and we were hitting the ball today," Garnand said. "I struggled a little bit with throwing strikes at first, but I was able to read the batters."

Garnand also did well on offense with three hits. Murray had two hits and Sprecher added two RBIs.

Kayla Ewing had two hits and two RBIs, and Alexis Fisher also had two hits for Williamsport (2-3, 0-3).

"It was a heartbreaker," Williamsport coach Tom Dzur said. "We played well, but we came up short. I thought Kelly pitched well. We were faced with elimination in the seventh inning, but we came back with one run to tie it up."
