HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Melvin M. Penwell, 66, of Harpers Ferry, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at the home of his sister, Linda Chapman.

Born Aug. 21, 1942, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Melvin L. Penwell and Mabel Irene Dillow Penwell.

He retired from William A. Hazel Construction Co., as a pipe layer.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948 of Charles Town, W.Va.

He is survived by Kim Anderson of Winchester, Va., Melissa Anderson of Ranson, W.Va., Angie Anderson of Harpers Ferry and Keith Anderson of Bunker Hill, W.Va., all whom he raised; one sister, Linda Chapman of Harpers Ferry; one brother, Thomas W. Penwell of Harpers Ferry; one niece; one nephew; one great-niece; and three great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Penwell and Gerald A. Penwell.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Cliff Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Murrill Hill Cemetery in Harpers Ferry.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
