WVSSAC board OKs fourth class
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Secondary School Activities Commission's Board of Control has passed a proposal for the second straight year to create a fourth classification for high school football.
The proposal was approved 64-58 and must be approved by the state Board of Education, which has rejected similar proposals twice in the past three years.
The state Board of Education will vote on the proposal after a public comment period. In 2006 the board rejected a football-only fourth class.
Last year's proposal would have created a fourth class for both football and girls and boys basketball. The Board of Control, comprised of principals, approved that measure 73-37 before the state board of Education rejected it 8-0.
