I want to thank everyone who called and sent e-mails and cards during my recovery from surgery. I am doing well and glad to be back. I especially would like to thank The Herald-Mail for keeping my column going during my absence.

St. Maria Goretti



The St. Maria Goretti High School PTO meeting will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The agenda will include a review of the 2009-10 budget.

Stations of the Cross will be Wednesday at 1:40 p.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Parents are encouraged to attend.

Community yard sale



Haven Lutheran Church, at 1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown, will sponsor a community yard sale Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Holly Place and Habitat for Humanity.

The church is offering table space for the yard sale to anyone who would like a high visibility location to show off their goods. A fee of $20 for table space will be donated to Holly Place and Habitat for Humanity. What you sell, you keep.

There will also be a bake sale and other food offerings.

Lions Club



The Longmeadow Lions Club will have representatives from Eco Depot at Thursday meeting.

Eco Depot features eco-friendly products for use in the yard and garden. The meeting will be at Always Ron's restaurant at 6:30 p.m. Plans for the Longmeadow Lions' 41st Charter Night on May 14 will be discussed at the meeting.

Longmeadow Lions are also reminded to phone in their reservations to the April 21 Leader Dog Program to region chair Hardy as soon as possible.

The membership would like to thank all those who supported the club at the spring pancake breakfast March 21.

TOPS 446



TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 was given a "sewing" lesson at its April 1 meeting.

The members were described in sewing terms by Mary, who led the program.

The group welcomed two new members, Rick and Eva.

Wednesday will be awards day. All are welcome to attend.

The group meets Wednesdays at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road, Hagerstown. Weigh-in begins at 8:45 a.m. with the meeting from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Becky Hartt led last week's program on "The Mediterranean Diet and a Healthy Lifestyle," which stresses the importance of a vegetable-based eating plan with fruit for snacks and dessert.

Rosemary Gill contributed an inspirational reading.

The April contest is titled "April Showers Bring May Flowers."

Mary Reid was presented with a five-year award and a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

The best TOPS losers were Angie Youngblood, Millie Toms and Elsie Horst, while the best KOPS losers were Louise Cline and Eileen Renwick.

The "Get R Done" competition resulted in a tie between Millie Toms and Angie Youngblood. Joan Budny won the KOPS best loser for the month.

Installation of officers will be held at the next meeting.

Those members who attended State Recognition Day said the conference was an inspirational experience.

The skit performed at the conference will be presented to the local chapter at a future meeting.

Book Sale



The annual AAUW Used Book Sale will be April 22 to 26 at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike, six miles south of Hagerstown.

Proceeds go toward scholarships for local students.

The hours are Wednesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m.

New church service



Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, will launch a new evening service Sunday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. Music, drama, meditation, and sharing the good news will be part of the come-a-you-are service. All ages are welcomed.
