One hurt in downtown Hagerstown fire

April 04, 2009

Traffic was rerouted through downtown for more than an hour Saturday night as firefighters responded to a fire at Elizabeth Court apartments, 55 E. Washington St.

About 25 firefighters, three engines and two ladder trucks responded to the scene of the blaze, which was dispatched as a fire with someone possibly trapped inside, said Kyd Dieterich, a Hagerstown Fire Department battalion chief.

One person was in the apartment, in which food on a stove caught fire, Dieterich said. The flames traveled to a nearby cupboard, he said. The woman's hands were burned and she suffered some smoke inhalation, he said. She was taken to Washington County Hospital, he said.

A cat was also in the sixth-floor apartment but was not injured, Dieterich said.

Most of the sixth floor was evacuated, but the other areas of the large apartment building were not affected, he said.

Two Community Rescue Service ambulances also responded to the fire, which was reported at 7:58 p.m., according to a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher.

Vehicles were rerouted on South Potomac Street from Washington Street at the Square Saturday evening.
