Boonsboro chess club places 3rd in state

The Boonsboro Middle School Chess Club participated March 21 in the 2009 Maryland Scholastic State Chess Championship in Towson, Md.

They began the day ranked seventh, but after five rounds of play, the BMS team finished in third place.

The team, led by seventh-grader Vincent Smith-DiLeo and sixth-grader Ricky Warrick, finishing in seventh and eighth place respectively, scored four points out of a possible five points in tournament play.

The middle school section had 90 players fighting for the top 10 trophy places. Eighth-grader David George, who earned 3.5 points and seventh-grader Nicholas Dougherty, with 3.0 points, rounded out the top four players for Boonsboro.

The BMS twelve-member team also consisted of eighth-grader Randy Kines with 2.0 points, seventh-graders Bronson King and Mark Leadingham each with 2.5 points, Bryce King and Gregory Fiola each with 2.0 points, sixth-graders Aaron George and Dakota Pfeiffer each with 2.0 points and Austin Fowler with 1.0 point.

Boonsboro resident Cory Woodhams, a sixth-grader from Springfield Middle School earned 2.5 points.

In the elementary school section two-day championship, Dominic Smith-DiLeo, a fifth-grader from Pleasant Valley Elementary, earned 2.0 points in a very high rated players section.

In the elementary school junior varsity section, PVE fifth-grader Evan Kerr, placed 42nd and teammate Christian Brown, a fourth-grader from PVE placed 48th, both earning 3.0 points. Fifth-grader Blake Dougherty who earned 2.5 points and a 63rd place finish represented Boonsboro Elementary School. This section had the highest number of players with 134.

In the K-3 section, Sierra Smith-DiLeo, a PVE third-grader, finished 15th with 3.0 points in another highly rated tournament section.
