Mediation center awards certificates to 18

March 31, 2009

The Washington County Community Mediation Center announced 13 adults and five public school students received mediator certificates recently.

Completion of mediation training includes 50 hours of classroom training, followed by an apprenticeship phase of mediation observations and mediating with a more experienced mediator.

At least twice a year, the center conducts in-service skills training on intake, presentation, mediation role-plays, outreach and basic skills training. The teens co-mediate cases that involve a teen in conflict, such as parent/teen, siblings or friends that might be in conflict about a variety of issues.

The free training is offered once a year to community members through funding from the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office, the Washington County Gaming Commission, the Community Foundation of Washington County, the United Way and private donations.
