Ballroom dancing set for Friday

AARP chapter to meet April 14

AARP Chapter 623 will meet at the Senior Center at Girls Inc., 626 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Tuesday, April 14, at 1 p.m.

Sally Waltz will speak about the Agriculture Heritage Museum at the Ag Center. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Lunch costs $3. Anyone wishing to eat should call 301-671-2368 by Friday, April 10.

Annual used book sale to be held

The AAUW Used Book Sale will be April 22 to 26 at the Washington County Agriculture Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike, six miles south of Hagerstown.


There will be 50,000 books for sale.

Hours are Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. Proceeds go toward scholarships for local students. For more information, call 301-733-2007.

TOPS Chapter 462

Smithsburg TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 was represented at State Recognition Days in Annapolis over the weekend.

TOPS members from chapters in Maryland and Washington, D.C., gathered to honor the weight losses for the past year. The total pounds lost for Maryland with TOPS was 7,255.25 pounds.

There were many inspirational stories. For instance, one TOPS member reached her goal and has maintained it for 41 years with TOPS. Awards were given out for losses ranging from 10 pounds to 122.25 pounds over the past year.

The Smithsburg chapter meets Thursdays at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 51 S Main St. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting from 6 to 7 p.m.

Homemakers Club plans get-together

The monthly meeting of the Brightwood Homemakers Club will be Tuesday, April 14, at Elks Lodge No. 378, at 9:30 a.m. A social get-together begins at 9:15 a.m.

The Family Life and Family Resources Committee will present a program on "Before Disaster: Inventory Valuables." There will be an update of the Washington County Homemakers scholarship fundraising event, which is scheduled for Friday, May 22.
