SMITHSBURG - Mr. Russell Lee Fisher Jr., 59, of Smithsburg, died Sunday, March 22, at his residence.

He was the husband of Paula Duhamel Fisher, whom he married March 17, 1979.

Born Jan. 11, 1950, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Russell Lee Fisher Sr. of Thurmont and the late Reva Belle Fraley Fisher.

Mr. Fisher graduated with a BS degree in psychology from Mount St. Mary's University and a master's in special ed from Western Maryland College.

He had been employed with the State of Maryland for a total of 34 years, teaching at the MD Correctional Training Center since 1985 and retiring in December of 2007.


He was a member of Graceham Moravian Church, Graceham, where he served as trustee, a Sunday school teacher for the Junior High Bible class for several years and recently was a member of the Adult Bible class. He also sang in the Senior Voice Chorus.

He was very active with the MD Classified Employee Association (MCEA), where he served as secretary of the local chapter and Board of Directors Statewide, and was very active in the correctional education association. He was awarded the Regional Educator of the Year in 1987.

He was a member of the Smithsburg Lions Club, where he served as secretary for over 10 years and was the bulletin editor for many years. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 168, Thurmont.

He was an avid train collector.

Surviving besides his father and wife is a daughter, Sarah A. Smith and husband, Jason, of Waynesboro; two sons, Nathan P. Fisher, at home, and Michael L. Fisher of Cockeysville; two granddaughters, Alexis Belle Smith and Madelyn Lee Smith, both of Waynesboro; and a sister, Sylvia Ann Miller and husband, Earl, of Creagerstown. He will also be remembered by his extended family, Sue and Don Dennis of Georgia; Rita and Steve Ailstock of Arnold Md.; and David and Nancy Duhamel of Florida. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Sincere appreciation is extended to family and friends for the support and concern shown during this difficult journey. Your compassion has helped the family remain steadfast to the promise of Jeremiah 29:11.

Mr. Fisher is at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont ,where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 3.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Graceham Moravian Church, 8231A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, with his pastor, the Rev. Jeff Gehris, officiating.

Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Graceham Moravian Cemetery, Graceham.

The family requests that memorials be made in memory of Mr. Fisher to the Graceham Moravian Church Pastor's Discretionary Fund, 8231A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788; or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
